Why Moms Don’t Need a Perfect Plan to Start the New Year

Why Moms Don’t Need a Perfect Plan to Start the New Year

Every January, the world shouts at us to set goals, get organized, and transform overnight into the “best version” of ourselves. But let’s be real—mom life doesn’t come with a pause button to plan and perfect. And guess what? You don’t need one. Here’s why: starting imperfectly is still starting.

Embrace the Messy Middle

Motherhood has already trained you for this. Think about the times you’ve juggled diapers, school drop-offs, and forgotten permission slips. You’ve mastered the art of doing your best with what you have. The New Year is no different. Whether your goals are personal, professional, or just getting everyone to eat a vegetable this week, progress matters more than perfection.

Why Perfection Isn’t the Goal

Perfect plans can be paralyzing. They whisper that if you can’t do it all, you shouldn’t even try. But God doesn’t ask for perfection; He asks for faithfulness. Taking one small step today is more powerful than waiting for the “perfect” moment that may never come.

How to Start Where You Are

  1. Pick One Thing: Instead of a long list of resolutions, focus on one priority. Maybe it’s drinking more water, reading with your kids, or finding five minutes to pray each day. Start small.
  2. Set Grace-Filled Goals: Choose goals that align with your life’s season. Give yourself permission to adapt or change course as needed.
  3. Celebrate Progress: Did you do something today that aligns with your goal? Celebrate it! Acknowledge the steps forward, no matter how tiny they feel.

The New Year isn’t about transforming overnight. It’s about showing up with the same courage you do every day. Your “messy start” is beautiful—because it’s real. Let’s redefine what success looks like, one imperfect step at a time.

You’ve probably already made 84 decisions today, and it may only be 9 a.m. Hello, dearest, welcome to motherhood. Making decisions for ourselves can be hard enough; then we add in making decisions for everyone in our family. And add to that pressure the fact that some of the decisions

The Work of Self-Care

I recently read a passage from a book which deconstructs the biblical story of Christ healing a woman with chronic bleeding:  “The healing was thorough and complete. It not only gave her body back to her but also gave her body back to other bodies. She was made whole for herself
