CULTIVATING PLAYFULNESS

CULTIVATING PLAYFULNESS

The importance of play at all ages:

  • Play reduces stress and anxiety. Engaging in playful activities releases endorphins which can improve your mood.
  • Play sparks creativity. When we play, we think more freely, explore ideas, and make new connections. This stimulates creative problem solving.
  • Play builds relationships. Sharing laughter and play brings people closer together. Play activities are a fun way for families, friends, couples and coworkers to bond.
  • Play keeps you feeling young and energetic. Playing keeps you engaged, active and feeling vibrant.

Allowing yourself to be silly:

  • Don’t worry about looking foolish. The best part of play is letting go of self-consciousness.
  • Give yourself permission to be childlike. Playful adults hold onto their childlike curiosity, imagination and sense of wonder.
  • Find the humor in everyday life. Look for the silly side of mundane situations.

Ideas for playful activities:

  • Play board games or video games with others
  • Tell jokes and funny stories
  • Dance around while listening to upbeat music
  • Engage in creative arts like painting or playing music
  • Go to comedy shows, improv classes, or take a laughter yoga class
  • Play with your kids – their playfulness can rub off!

The key is to schedule time for play, even when you’re busy. Make playfulness a regular part of your life to reap the benefits.
