Decluttering with Kids

A Mom’s Guide to Tackling the Mess (and Keeping It Real)

Decluttering with kids in tow might sound like a recipe for chaos, but it’s actually an opportunity to teach them valuable lessons about responsibility, gratitude and simplicity. Plus, it’s a chance to turn the chore into a bonding experience—with a little patience and a lot of grace.

Why Decluttering Is Worth It

The start of a new year often feels like a fresh slate, and a tidy home can create space for clearer minds. When we declutter, we’re not just making room physically; we’re creating mental and emotional space for what matters most. And when kids are involved, it’s an opportunity to instill lifelong habits.

Tips for Decluttering with Kids

  1. Set Realistic Expectations: Kids—especially younger ones—won’t become minimalist masterminds overnight. Start small with one room or even one drawer.
  2. Make It a Game: Turn decluttering into a scavenger hunt or a challenge: “Let’s see who can find five toys they don’t play with anymore.”
  3. Teach Gratitude: Explain why it’s important to donate items to others who need them. Let your kids feel the joy of giving.
  4. Create Ownership: Let kids have a say in what stays and what goes. Giving them agency makes them more likely to respect the process—and the space they’re creating.

A Grace-Filled Approach

Decluttering with kids can be slow and imperfect, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t a picture-perfect home but a space that serves your family well. Take breaks, offer snacks and celebrate the progress—even if it’s just one shelf. By involving your kids, you’re not just tidying up; you’re building skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
